Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery
(Blepharoplasty)
What Is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty (aka "eyelid surgery") alters the appearance of eyes by removing excess upper lid skin and/or reducing or eliminating bags under the eyes. Some patients have hollowness under their eye and need fat repositioning or tiny fat injections to give more fullness to the eyelids.
Dr. Sastry has performed hundreds of cosmetic and functional eyelid surgeries. Cosmetic eyelid surgery is performed mostly in the office under local anesthesia. After the patient arrives, he/she is medically evaluated by checking vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, etc.). Then the eyelids are precisely marked by Dr. Sastry, and the patient is given some preoperative medications. The patient is then taken to the operative suite and the surgery is performed by Dr. Sastry with proper sterile operative setup. Surgery is typically very comfortable with only Tylenol used for pain. Duration of the surgery is one hour for two eyelids and an hour and a half to two for all four eyelids. Ice packs are placed on the eyelids and the patient is discharged 20-30 minutes after the surgery with post operative instructions.
Dr. Sastry also specializes in eyelid surgeries for medical problems. Entropion (turning inward of the eyelid) and ectropion (turning outward of the eyelid) are both conditions most often caused by aging or certain injuries. Ptosis is the medical term for drooping of the upper eyelid; once the eyelid obscures vision, the problem becomes medical in addition to cosmetic. Squamous and basal cell cancers can be carefully removed and the eyelid can be reconstructed to look virtually as if no surgery was done. Some eyelid surgeries may be covered by insurance if the underlying condition is affecting vision or is causing discomfort.
Asian Eyelid Surgery (aka "Double Eyelid Surgery")
For Asians who were born without a crease in their upper eyelids, Asian eyelid surgery (or double eyelid surgery) might be the answer.
Asian eyelid surgery is a special type of cosmetic blepharoplasty for Asian Americans lacking a natural crease in their upper eyelid. It provides a more alert appearance by creating a crease in the upper eyelid to form what is known as a "double eyelid".
