Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is one of the the leading causes of vision loss in people over 65 years old, affecting more people than cataracts and glaucoma combined.
AMD is a deterioration of the macula. When your macular doesn't work properly your vision can experience blurriness, dark areas or distortion.
Macular degeneration is very common. Although there is currently no known cure for AMD, there are medical, surgical and laser treatments than can slow down loss of vision.
When To See An Ophthalmologist
If you notice changes in your vision your ability to see colors and fine details, see your eye doctor to rule out macular degeneration.
Ophthalmologists have imaging tools that can detect early signs of macular degeneration before the onset of symptoms. Therefore, regular eye exams are recommended, especially if you're over 65.
